Activity outline
Domicile: In 2007 we secured three places to accommodate children, one each in Siem Reap (CCC/NCCC), Battambang and Takeo (in temple). We could take care of children in the Child Care Center and educate them with no real problem.
Self-support: In Cambodian education system, students graduated from senior high school are qualified to enter university/college, but the graduation rate is low. It is often difficult for students having average score to have high school degree. As for the public education we support children until they graduate junior high school. After that we support three more years for job training toward their self-reliance. 2007 was the second year of job training for three boys working on building the New Child Care Center (NCCC). One of the girls was supposed to work after graduation of junior high school aiming to become self-reliant, but she became a working student of senior high school with her strong will. We decided to continue supporting her until her graduation. Two children have been continuously trainee bonzes.
Life: We have given life- education/life skill training in consideration for morals/courtesy, health care, maintenance of healthy environment (cleaning/tidying), farming, traditional dance and Japanese. As for the traditional dance, it has become difficult to continue teaching it due to the fee to employ dance teacher. Some children have been able to learn Japanese with good will of a Japanese living in Cambodia.
In the Child Care Center (girls), girls themselves could buy foodstuff and cook together cooperatively, although female cook helped them prepare meal. Children who went to primary school and junior high school had average grade generally.
Home Garden: [Siem Reap]
  • Vegetable cultivation: It was effective in terms of securing foodstuff, but not enough as income source. It was a home garden level. We still had issues to review, such as cultivation scale and technical assistance.
  • Pig farming: We gave up pig farming this year because of last year's failure caused by pig disease.
Issues in the future
  • Job training: NCCC is under construction and three boys had technical training of architecture and civil work. Three girls had job training working in Moloppor Cafe. Their job gain situation seems to be good.
  • We would like to provide job training in variety of areas in the integrated job training center. At the same time we have to consider how to raise youngster’s awareness about starting work.
  • Since we decreased local instructors for children because of employment cost, we would like to accept Japanese volunteers to continue life, health and hygiene and Japanese educations.
  • Improvement of making and selling goods: This year we sold goods such as cookies, coffee and pepper to tourists to earn money. (Total sales: 345 pieces, Total selling amount: US$1,647.41, Net earnings: US$899.64)
  • To expand the range of options in occupation, earlier start of training in the integrated human resource development center is required.
  • Since the number of children accommodated decreased, we have been informing that we are ready to accept children from Community Cooperation Network (CCN) (66 unions in 4 states) and regional poor families who have no learning opportunities.
  • It is necessary to secure opportunities to give arts and foreign language education.

[Building condition of New Child Care Center (NCCC)]
In the construction of Boys' Block of NCCC beginning in 2006, three heart children are working as job trainees. We celebrated the completion of the Boys' Block together with tourist in November 2007 from Japan. It is rare wooden architecture site now in Cambodia. The three boys have studied the basis of architecture such as surveying, pipe laying, carpentry and landfill as one of job training while building actually their own house. They will also acquire more knowledge and skills while building the Girls' Block in 2008. We are supporting to let them self-support in the future in Cambodia where it is hard to self-support only with agriculture. Japanese experts, Messrs. Osumi and Yumino have made efforts for this project inconceivably.
